DAY 42
10-31-09
LEVITICUS 26-27
Good Morning!
Well, we made it through Leviticus. There were many challenging pages. If there is a way to summarize, I would have to use Lev. 26:12, “I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.” This beautiful statement from God is another enticement to people like me who still struggle with faith, life, and obedience. The motivation for regular people who want to be saved and live a life of faith and service is that God will walk with us. He is mine and I am his.
Now, not to be discouraging, but Numbers starts off with more reading challenges and then gets exciting. Stay with it. Keep reading. We will be blessed by God and our discipline.

The Year of the Fresh Start
DAY 41
10-30-09
LEVITICUS 24-25
Good Morning!
God has always been a God of grace, mercy, and a God of second chances, He has instituted in the law ways for starting over. Whether its sacrifices of atonement, scapegoats, blood on doorposts that ward off the “angel of death,” or an ark made of gopher wood, God’s love brings a new day and new start.
In Lev. 25, God institutes the "year of jubilee" where liberty is proclaimed throughout the country. All property returns to its original owners; those who were compelled by poverty to sell themselves as slaves, regained their freedom; there is neither sowing or reaping or pruning of vines; and everybody is expected to live on what the fields and the vineyards produced "of themselves."
There are three distinct features of the Jubilee Year we should consider.
1. Personal Liberty. Jubilee is the time in which liberty is given to all the inhabitants of the country. The importance of Jubilee was that it was intended to rebuild relationships.
2. Restitution of Property. The Jubilee Year was meant to exclude the possibility of selling any piece of land permanently. God’s motive is: (Lev 25:23) "'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.”
3. Living the Simple Life. The Year of Jubilee shows the reason why God calls His children to the "simple life." They are given opportunity to develop the habit of living within limited means and living off what God gives.
This special gift of God and this way of living would change our lives if we would put it into practice. If we only would.

Honor the Name of the Lord
DAY 40
10-29-09
LEVITICUS 22-23
Good Morning!
Have you ever wondered what happens when we do not live as God wants us to? Does something actually happen when we offer God our left over gifts; no gifts at all; or if we don’t keep his commands?
I hope no believer will fall into the trap of Satan by believing that God does not care about these matters. You can’t read Leviticus with seeing how God feels about the holiness of his name. The fourth commandment (Exodus 20:7) reads, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”
God expounds on the fourth commandment in the instructions in Leviticus. In Lev. 22:2 & 32, God reveals (again) his command to respect his name with how we act; our motives; and in the way we approach him. The LORD says, “Do not bring shame on my holy name.” When we do not honor God, we dishonor his holy name.
God’s wonderful grace and his new covenant with us don’t take away the eternal principle of honoring the Name of the Lord in all we do.
Barry
Exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. (Isaiah 24:15)
Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Colossians 3:17)

You Must be Different to be Blessed
DAY 39
10-28-09
LEVITICUS 19-20-21
Good Morning!
When I was young, I wanted to be different like everybody else. I wanted to do my own thing by having the same clothes. I wanted to be unique by having the same hair cut. I was embarrassed to be good and have clean language. I thank God that those days are behind me. “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” (1 Cor. 13:11)
Have I really put those childish ways behind me? God requires me to be different because he has made me holy. God demands that I renounce the detestable ways of the world. I can never be like the evil world…ever! I have to stand out by being different from world and just like God.
My prayer for myself is that I will be set apart, different, and holy in all things: language; money matters; morals and ethics; purity; worship; service; and pleasure.
Think about your life. What does God think about your life? Would he consider you “set apart”? If not, it’s time. Set yourself apart.
Barry
You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them. But I said to you, "You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey." I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from the nations. God Gets Personal
DAY 38
10-27-09
LEVITICUS 16-17-18
Good Morning!
The laws of God are starting to get really personal. God has already addressed even the most personal ailments and bodily functions. I can’t help but think that modern believer’s would scoff and reject this kind of intrusion. Yet, God is very clear why he is getting into their personal business – Lev. 18:2-3 “I am the Lord your God. You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.”
God’s purpose is to make a holy people and for that happen for sinful, defiled, and unholy people, three things stand out from today’s reading…
1. You can’t do as you please. God requires obedience; humility; and even fearful acceptance of his laws and decrees.
Lev. 16:2 “Tell your brother Aaron not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.”
2. Sins must be atoned for. God’s purpose is that Israel should know that sins must be paid for through the blood of the innocent. He also wants to remind them that their sins are taken away and forgotten.
Lev. 16: 21-22 “He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites — all their sins — and put them on the goat's head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.”
3. God demands sexual purity from his holy people. The pagan’s detestable sexual practices are not going to be tolerated.
Lev. 18:29-30 “Everyone who does any of these detestable things — such persons must be cut off from their people. Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.”
God’s expectations are always a great challenge. His blessings for his obedient children are even greater.

Ok…these chapters are a challenge!
DAY 37
10-26-09
LEVITICUS 14-15
Good Morning!
God now gives his instructions on dealing with infectious diseases and discharges. Gross! Here goes.
My favorite thing to do – my passionate hobby – is motorcycle camping. I love long rides to beautiful places and camping out under the stars in middle of nowhere. I write this because I go to great lengths to stay reasonably clean and presentable. I’m not one of those bikers who will go for a week or two without changing clothes, bathing, and shaving. I may be a little wimpy, but who really likes to be unkempt and smelly? I don’t.
Now imagine a huge group of people – some say over two million – with all their belongings and huge flocks and herds of animals wandering and camping in the desert. Food and clean water is iffy. Sanitation must have been a nightmare. To be frank, waste must have been everywhere. Imagine the smell! Add to that the fires and smoke. Add again the sacrificial blood and guts. Simple human bodily functions would have been complicated and a challenge.
They were wide open to disease and death. So God gives them precise instructions on cleanliness and dealing with infectious diseases. God’s instructions on becoming ceremonially clean with the sacrifices and anointing were simply God’s way letting the Israelites know that God is in charge; he is involved; and holy people will follow his precise instructions in all things. He demands clean, holy people serve him. Spiritually and physically.
That’s all I have to say about discharges.
Barry
"A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." (John 13:10)

How to Read Leviticus…and addressing God’s view of “bald men”
DAY 36
10-25-09
LEVITICUS 11-12-13
Good Afternoon!
I’ve had lots of comments regarding how boring or confusing reading Leviticus is. Don’t worry about it. It’s a challenge for all of us! Part of your task is to learn the discipline of reading the word of God in its most challenging sections. Stay with it. You’ll do fine.
If you care to read and learn something at the same time in Leviticus, look for interesting words, sentences, or topics that are unique. For instance, I am drawn to the precise detail of what God considers an unclean animal; an unclean person; and an unclean house. It’s not just about the meat, the blood, the sores, and the mildew.
Since Jesus later declares all foods clean (Mark 7:19), I believe God is trying to create in Israel, a nation that is pure, clean, and holy in body, soul, and mind. He wants them to be so different and holy that they are set completely apart from the pagan world around them. God is making a holy nation based on his holiness. God said, "I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy… I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.”(Lev. 11:44-45)
Now, about baldness. I don’t want to let my friends down by not addressing it. God declares that baldness does not make men unclean. (Lev. 11:40-41) Further, having a freckle, or a bump, or a lump, doesn’t require a priest’s attention. Since there is no longer a Levitical Priesthood, any spot on my bald head is now the responsibility of my dermatologist. She has declared my head, clean!
Barry
Some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths. (2 Kings 2:23-25) Good for Elisha!

The Serious Business of Coming Before the LORD
DAY 35 10-24-09 LEVITICUS 9-10
Good Morning!
To teach his people the seriousness of being in his presence, the Lord has shown them his terrible glory; given his direct instructions to follow; and now, has lashed out with a death sentence to the priests, Nadab and Abihu.
It’s too bad this episode is no longer seen as an example of the seriousness of approaching God. The extremists among us have messed it up for everyone. I’ve heard this episode used as a warning against chewing gum or wearing shorts. On the other end, I’ve seen this completely ignored and viewed as irrelevant by those who think they have the liberty to approach God in any way they think is cool.
Being in God’s presence in worship and in daily life is serious and a blessing at the same time. God went to the ends he did to teach his children to be humble, respectful, and obedient. Worship is not to be a common activity. It is not to be a gloom and doom solemn event; or a free-for-all either. If worship is a boring ritualistic event, or an unbiblical show, it only indicates how we have missed God’s point. Too bad for us.
Lev 9:5-6 Then the whole community came forward and stood before the Lord. And Moses said, "This is what the Lord has commanded you to do so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you."
Lev 9:23-24 The glory of the Lord appeared to the whole community. Fire blazed forth from the Lord's presence and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When the people saw this, they shouted with joy and fell face down on the ground.
Lev 10:3 'I will display my holiness through those who come near me. I will display my glory before all the people.'"
Lev 10:10-11 You must distinguish between what is sacred and what is common, between what is ceremonially unclean and what is clean. And you must teach the Israelites all the decrees that the Lord has given them through Moses."
Living before God in daily life sacrificial worship and on the Lord’s Day must return to the special; God-focused; word-directed; humbling; and joyous event God intended it to be.

Clean for Holy Work
DAY 34
10-23-09
LEVITICUS 7-8
Good Morning!
Aaron and his sons are ceremonially purified by Moses – made holy for their holy work. Has it ever occurred to you just how bloody and filthy their work was? Day after day the blood sacrifices were made. Blood and guts were everywhere. They were covered with it.
Recall the care with which the beautiful priestly garments were made. They were made out of costly material. The garments were sanctified. As Aaron and his sons stand at the entrance, Moses sprinkles them with blood and oil; blood and oil all over those beautiful, clean, holy clothes!
In Hebrews 9:13, the author writes, “The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.” Clean? It was a bloody mess! But God is beginning the lesson that Christians can understand today - that we are cleansed and purified by blood. We are made holy by blood. And as hard as it is to visualize, when we are covered by the blood of Christ – the Lamb of God that takes away our sin – we are clean, pure, and beautiful.
We stand before God as priests ready to serve, covered with blood of the Lamb of God.

“…and You Will Be Forgiven.”
DAY 33
10-22-09
LEVITICUS 4-5-6
Good Morning!
This is an important three chapters to read if you sin. Obviously we do sin, so the principles do apply to us. I think it is important to know that God knows the difference between intentional and unintentional sin. But if you notice, it makes no difference. Sin is sin. It must be dealt with. It must be confessed. It must be forgiven.
Do you think we often see unintentional sin as less important and less “sinful”? We are quick to get on our knees when we sin and know it. Are we less concerned when we find out we sinned unintentionally? Sin is sin; and God provides the way to redemption.
1. Unintentional must be dealt with.
Lev. 4:2 “This is how you are to deal with those who sin unintentionally by doing anything that violates one of the Lord's commands”
2. If you violate one of the Lord’s commands without realizing it, you are guilty.
Lev. 4:13-14 "If the entire Israelite community sins by violating one of the Lord's commands, but the people don't realize it, they are still guilty. When they become aware of their sin…”
3. God always provides a way to be forgiven and restored to your relationship with him.
Lev. 4:35 “Through this process, the priest will purify the people from their sin, making them right with the Lord, and they will be forgiven.”
4. When you sin and realize it, don’t deny it, admit it.
Lev. 5:2 “When you realize what you have done, you must admit your defilement and your guilt.”
Be quick to admit your sins; quick to repent; and God will be quick to forgive.
Barry
“…your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended… Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” (2 Cor. 7:9-10)

4. When you sin and realize it, don’t deny it, admit it.
Lev. 5:2 “When you realize what you have done, you must admit your defilement and your guilt.”
Be quick to admit your sins; quick to repent; and God will be quick to forgive.

What Kind of Gifts Do You Offer to God?
DAY 32
10-21-09
LEVITICUS 1-2-3
Good Morning!
The gifts of worship and atonement that are expected by God are to be the best we have - “without defect.” Can you imagine what a challenge that must have been to Israel while they were wondering around in arid places? Offering appropriate gifts to God is neither cheap nor convenient. That is what makes them special and acceptable.
I‘ve already discussed the need to joyfully give our treasure and talents (10-18-09). Today’s chapters remind me to give to give God the first and the best of what I have. How can I give God the leftovers and the defective? That is not how he gives to me.
Give God the best of what you have.
Barry

God Moving In
DAY 31
10-20-09
EXODUS 40
Good Morning!
The last chapter of Exodus is an exciting and beautiful scene. All of the items of the tabernacle – God’s Tent – are finished. They are beautiful, but they are ordinary. Nothing ordinary is adequate when associated with the LORD! Every one and every item is made holy by anointing, washing, and sacrifice. God will not move in until everything consecrated and made holy. When everything is consecrated, God’s presence moves in.
The parallels are significant. God’s presence will not move into our lives until we are made holy. We are the temple of God. We are made holy when we are consecrated; washed; anointed; and sacrificed for. We are then not ordinary anymore. Then, God Spirit moves into our lives. All of this is done for us – to us – by Jesus Christ.
What a blessing!
Barry
You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God…Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (1 Cor. 6:11 & 19)

“As the LORD Commanded”
DAY 30
10-19-09
EXODUS 38-39
Good Morning!
It troubles me to see the lack of respect for God’s commands by his own people. Now, to be honest, that includes me – a sinner saved by grace. We all disobey the Father. But, that is not what I’m referring to. There is a biblical principle that applies to the way we live; how we make judgments; how we worship; what we teach; and what we emphasize. The principle is following the Lord’s commands. God has continually stressed – from the instructions given to Adam and Eve; in the law given to Israel; and to Christians today; that if we follow his commands, we will be blessed.
Ten times in two these chapters we read that the craftsman built the articles of worship “as the Lord commanded Moses.” That can’t be understated since Moses stated it. They obeyed out of respect and a strong desire to live by the commands of God. God said to “build everything according to the pattern I will show you.” (Ex. 25:9 & 40) I know that verse can be over used; taken out of context by many; but it can’t be dismissed or ignored. The reason they obeyed God’s commands was because what they were making; and who they were as a people is “HOLY TO THE LORD.” (Ex.39:30) God’s holy people obey the words of God.
The result of carefully following the word of God was the blessing. “The Israelites had done all the work just as the Lord had commanded Moses. Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the Lord had commanded. So Moses blessed them.” (Ex. 39:42-43)
Pattern theology – reasonable pattern theology – does not take away our freedom in Christ. It does not make us Pharisees or legalists. It shows God that we love him and respect him. I am liberated by following his word and living by his commands rather than the world and my own selfish desires. That is my goal. Living it out is my constant struggle.
Barry
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed. (Rom. 12:2)
Take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. (Phil. 3:17)
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, (2 Tim. 1:13)

The Joy of Giving
DAY 29
10-18-09
EXODUS 35-36-37
Good Morning!
All my life I have been taught that giving is a joy. I was taught wonderful Bible lessons about the widow who put her last penny in the gift box; and about giving joyfully from the heart. I was particularly touched by the generosity of the Macedonian Christians who gave to the poor Judean church even though they were poor themselves.
After today’s reading I feel compelled to reconsider my giving. Not just the amount but the heart behind it. I don’t give grudgingly. But do I joyfully give? I don’t have to have my check pried from my hand; but do I give with a prayer and joy in my heart? I can’t honestly say I give it that much thought.
Read again Israel’s attitude in giving their treasure to God.
(35:21) Everyone who was willing and whose heart moved him came and brought an offering to the Lord.
(Ex 35:29) All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the Lord freewill offerings for all the work the Lord
(Ex 36:5-6) The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done." Then Moses gave an order…"No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary." And so the people were restrained from bringing more…
That is how I want to give. How about you?

Stubborn
DAY 28
10-17-09
EXODUS 32-33-34
Good Morning!
Are you stubborn? Look at it this way…either you are and you admit it; or, you are and you won’t admit it. We all are stubborn in one way or another. Here’s the deal – stubbornness is a sin. It is pride. Now it’s one thing to be full of confidence; and quite another thing to be full of pride.
God’s people are testing him. They are testing the one who wiped out Egypt. How stupid can they be? When I admit that I still stubbornly cling to sin; desire my way instead of God’s way; or fail to truly repent; I am testing the patience of God.
There is Good News. Even though God’s justice is brought down, he also shows his mercy and patience to the one’s he loves. Many guilty people paid the price for stubborn pride and sin; but God listened to Moses’ plea to spare the nation.
Let go of your pride. Let God help you overcome your stubborn nature. Be satisfied with God’s word; his will; and his ways.
Barry
He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

The Priesthood
DAY 27
10-16-09
EXODUS 29-30-31
Good Morning!
How special it was to serve God in his presence. Aaron and his sons were blessed indeed. It is amazing to see the great God-given detail of the holy objects of worship; and the solemn ceremony of worship and atonement. More evidence that worshipping the Holy God is not to be ordinary and casual. That is not to say that the beauty is in formality; but worship and service is supposed to be big deal. It is special. It is holy.
As much as I admire the priests and the honor they enjoy in service, Christians are more blessed than they would ever understand. Unlike them, all Christians are priests before God. Not just one special family. We approach God anytime. We are his temple. We are always atoned for. There is no more blood and incense. The holiness of God is not behind a curtain any longer.
Thank God for the blessing of being a holy priest; and the honor of serving him.
Barry
You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5

Dignity, Honor, and Holiness
DAY 26
10-15-09
EXODUS 26-27-28
Good Morning!
God is teaching Israel how to approach, live with, and honor the LORD. He is holy, so everything associated with him must be holy, consecrated, and even beautiful. Worshiping God and having a relationship with him is not supposed to be ordinary; it is special – holy! I am touched by the degree that God is going to specifically tell Israel what he wants in the tabernacle, the altar, and the priestly garments. God says to follow his instructions exactly. “See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” (Exodus 25:40)
Another thing I am thankful for is that God has grown his children up from the outward appearances of honoring him. He is now more concerned about the inner man. Outward beauty is replaced by inner beauty (1 Peter 3:3-4). The physical tabernacle is replaced by a more perfect spiritual one (Hebrews 9:11). Priestly garments are replaced by being “clothed with Christ” (Galatians 3:27).
Does this mean that God is not concerned with outward appearances any longer? Of course not. Our lives, the way he approach him, and the way we honor him is still a concern for God. Worship is not a free for all, or a time when we do what we think is right. We still must be guided by the Word of God in worship matters because worship always matters to the holy God.
When you approach God, the “inner man” must be concerned about the “outer man”. Approach the God of the Universe with dignity, honor, and holiness. Worship is special. It is not supposed to be ordinary. Your physical life and your inner life (heart & attitude) work together so that the whole person can approach God in holiness. No garment or fancy building is going to make you holy. Only Jesus Christ can make you holy.

Will We Obey Everything God Commands?
DAY 25
10-14-09
EXODUS 23-24-25
Good Morning!
As God continues to give his law to Israel, he begins the process of making a covenant with the people. The terms of the covenant are: God blesses and the people obey. Okay, I know that’s the simplistic version; but that’s what it amounts to. But is it really so simplistic? Not really.
God says multiple times in Exodus, “I will”. God is the one who makes this relationship work – “I will kill.” “I will hear.” “I will give.” And Israel’s response is “we will.” Ex. 24:3 All the people answered with one voice, "We will do everything the Lord has commanded." Ex. 24:7 Again they all responded, "We will do everything the Lord has commanded. We will obey."
In a covenant relationship with God, he will bless his sinful people whether they will obey or not. I know I have to be careful here. That is not to say there are no consequences for disobedience. Just wait to see how God punishes them for disobedience. However, because of his covenant, God blesses, and the response to his blessings is obedience.
Notice in Ex. 23:25 “Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water.” It’s not “Worship the Lord your God, then his blessing will be on your food and water.” God’s part is blessing. Israel’s part is responding with obedience.
Of course there are always exceptions. But in general, God blesses his weak, sinful, and disobedient people. If God withheld his blessings until we were obedient, the blessings would never come. This is called Grace.
Thank God!

God Takes Us As We Are
DAY 24
10-13-09
EXODUS 20-21-22
Good Morning!
In Exodus 22:31, God says, “You must be my holy people.” This will be a constant expectation of the LORD. Anything or anyone associated with God must be holy. It is hard to fathom, however, some of the holy laws and how “unholy” they seem. The Ten Commandments give the basis of a holy relationship with the holy God. Then, many of the laws that followed seemed so violent, worldly, and unfair. Sanctioned violence; slavery; and fear.
What do you expect? God’s people are a product of their times and circumstances. Ancient people were under the influence of an evil pagan world. In the Law of Moses, God starts the process of changing the mind and culture of his people. They had to learn to respect God, life, each other, justice, and righteousness. It is a long way to the beautiful and immortal words of Jesus, “If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” and “pray for those who persecute you.”
The law was meant to stop the forward progress of paganism and lay the foundation of righteousness; so that one day Jesus could build his church on himself based on grace, forgiveness of sins, and love for all people. Therefore, at this point in reading through the Bible, be patient as God works his will through imperfect people. We will see even more shocking stuff than this.
God takes us as we are, and makes us into what he wants us to be.

Why Complain?
DAY 23
10-12-09
EXODUS 17-18-19
Good Morning!
In the build up to Israel finally meeting God and formally creating a national relationship with God on the mountain, there is an issue that will continue and I just don’t get it. God’s great holiness, love, compassion, and extreme power have all been plainly displayed to Israel. They went from slave to free; and from a loose band of families to a nation. They have a real leader. What else do they want!? All the whining, complaining, issues, and problems, looking back, and second guessing...ENOUGH!
After all the evidence of God’s care, even after they whine and God gives them water, they have the nerve to say, “Is the Lord among us or not?” (17:7) My personal conviction about my morning reading is simple…I will make it a point to notice what God does for me. I will not complain since I have nothing to complain about. I will ignore the whining I hear everyday. I will praise God because God is always good to me.

Who’s got Your Back?
DAY 22
10-11-09
EXODUS 14-15-16
Good Morning!
Israel’s escape is not going to be easy. When Pharaoh realizes that his slaves are gone he and his army set out after them. Obviously, Israel panics, and faced with certain death they long to be back in Egypt as slaves, safe and sound.
Moses however is full of faith. He knows what can and will be done for them. He tells the people "Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm." We have an old saying, “Just don’t stand there do something!” Moses gave them opposite command of “Don’t do anything, just stand there.” God will rescue them. There are times when we must stand still and let God do his thing.
Now, as much as Moses is right, God told the people to quit crying and “get moving!” In his power as the Only God, he will save Israel and drown the Egyptians, but Israel must act and move with God. God moves to their rear and protects them. He has their back.
God has their back when the enemy is coming. God has their back when they cross the Red Sea. God has their back when they are hungry. God has their back when they are thirsty. God has their back when they face plagues and diseases. God said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”
God has our back in the same powerful way. If we obey him and move with him as he leads, guides, protects, heals, and feeds, we will reach a better promised land.

Lest Ye Forget
DAY 21
10-10-09
EXODUS 11-12-13
Good Morning!
The promise is kept and Israel is free. God showed his power over the Egyptian gods and Pharaoh. He showed his love for Abraham’s descendents. Moses gathered up Joseph’s bones; the people gathered all their possessions - and the possessions of the Egyptians; and they headed to the desert. Free at last after 430 years.
God passed over the land and killed the first born of everyone in Egypt who was not protected by blood. Don’t miss the forward looking elements of this event. God’s people were saved from death by being covered by blood; and they ate a meal meant to keep God’s salvation fresh in their minds for the rest of their lives.
The lessons are simple. Salvation from death requires the death and the blood of the Lamb of God. Those saved from death must remember what God and the Lamb Jesus did to save them. It is a lasting ordinance. Our children must know the significance if Jesus is to be remembered for all generations.
I beg you to remember. Don’t let the Lord’s Supper only be about a tiny piece of cracker and tiny sip of grape juice. It is all about the Lamb of God and the salvation of God’s children. Don’t forget.

Accepting Help and Changing Not
DAY 20
10-9-09
EXODUS 8-9-10
Good Morning!
Pharaoh had to learn the hard way. His heart was so hard that he refused to submit to God even at the cost of his kingdom and people. Did you notice how Pharaoh would “relent” after experiencing the plagues and then when God gave relief his heart hardened again?
How often do we suffer, need help, or find ourselves in dire circumstances and then pray for God to intervene? He lovingly helps us and then we go right on living as if nothing happened. On one hand, we must remember that doesn’t help based on our ability to “be good.” He helps us based on his love and grace. If God only gives help when I change, he’d never give me help.
On the other hand, God’s love, help, and grace is supposed to lead us to change our behavior. It should cause us to appreciate him by living the righteous life he demands. How childish we can be when we ask God for help and then go on living like nothing ever happened. That is the essence of a hard, unappreciative heart.
Pray for God’s help. Let his loving kindness and answered prayers change you.

Hard Hearts
DAY 19
10-8-09
EXODUS 5-6-7
Good Morning!
The salvation of Israel begins. Pharaoh refuses to let the people go and punishes them with even more harsh labor and treatment. Of course, they responded normally as humans do – they complained; they doubted; and they accused. It’s not right, but it’s typical.
In these three chapters, the prominent feature is hard hearts. Usually the focus is on Pharaoh’s hard heart. However, Moses’ heart was hard and Israel’s was hard also. Pharaoh’s heart was hard because that was the kind of man he was. God used his disposition against him. He wasn’t a soft-hearted man made hard by God. He was already hard hearted, and God used it for his plan and glory.
Israel’s heart was hard and it showed in their doubt; lack of faith; and impatience. They said to Moses, "May the Lord judge and punish you for making us stink before Pharaoh and his officials. You have put a sword into their hands, an excuse to kill us!"
Moses’ was hard. He wanted to quit because his task was too difficult. He complained to God, "Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me? Ever since I came to Pharaoh as your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done nothing to rescue them!"
Hard hearts are the refusal to listen, obey, submit, or give glory to God. When we don’t get our way, or have to endure hardship, we can stubbornly refuse to let God work it out, or even blame him for our struggles. A soft heart will say what Mary said when her world was turned upside down by an unexpected pregnancy – “May it be to me as you have said.”
Hard heart or soft, God will still work his plan. A soft, submissive, and loving heart, though, makes life more bearable. Hard hearts make it worse. You choose!
Barry
Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith. (Heb 10:22)

Excuses and Solutions
DAY 18
10-7-09
EXODUS 2-3-4
Good Morning!
God keeps the promise he made to Abram - his descendants went into slavery and God rescued them after four hundred years (Gen.15:13-16). Can’t you see God working his plan on every page? When things seem desperate, God leads and works his people through the challenge.
The people are not the only one’s challenged. Moses is challenged and God is challenged too. In this case God’s power and plan are worked through baby Moses being found by Pharaoh’s daughter; being nursed by his own mother; and being raised in Pharaoh’s house. Who better than Moses to lead the people to the Promised Land?
The challenge God faces is Moses’ reticence. He’s afraid to go. He pleads with God to choose someone else. Every excuse Moses makes, God has the answer and the solution. God has the power to help us overcome fear and limitations. Finally God says “You’re going!”
My prayer is that I will accept the challenges that God assigns to me. I can’t promise I’ll never be afraid, or that I’ll not make excuses. However, I’ll try to keep the promise that I’ll accept God’s help when he says “Go!”

Looking Ahead
DAY 17
10-6-09
GENESIS 49-50 & EXODUS 1
Good Morning!
An important feature of biblical history is the way the ancients looked forward. They acknowledged that God was working; that God had a plan; and they were a part of it. When Jacob blessed his sons on his death bed, he acknowledged God’s past dealings with his family. And he looked ahead – in a prophetic way – to what God would do in the future.
Notice in Jacob’s blessing for Judah in Genesis 49:10, Jacob looks forward to see that God will bless the family of Judah with power and rule. Now Jacob obviously didn’t understand the messianic implications, but he acknowledged God’s plan working through his son.
Dwelling on the past or being stuck in the present is a mindset that holds us back. The ability to plan, dream, and look forward is healthy way to live in the kingdom of God. This is true for our families. We need to raise children to look to the great possibilities of a great future. It is true in the church. Churches can and do get stuck by lack of forward thinking and vision.
What was the future for Israel’s family? Slavery, then freedom. No matter what, God’s plan for them was going to be fulfilled. “To Canaan’s Land, I’m On My Way.”
Look ahead. Acknowledge God’s past and current blessings; and then look, plan, and move ahead.
Barry
"Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded…there is hope for your future." declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 31:16-17)

Before I Get Old
DAY 16
10-5-09
GENESIS 46-47-48
Good Morning!
Before I get old, I want to recognize that my life is blessed. I have the best wife, the most wonderful children, a loving family, and the best friends I’ve ever had. I am a child of God Most High. I am a sinner saved by his one and only Son, Jesus. I am filled with God’s Holy Spirit. My ministry, church family, and community are a blessing. I am healthy, wealthy, and overwhelmed by God’s provision in my life. I can’t imagine that my life could get any better – but I know it will. I am confident that if I lost all things I would still be blessed. I know I am going to heaven.
Jacob was extremely blessed by God and I appreciate the way he recognized how good God had been to him. "May the God before whom my grandfather Abraham and my father, Isaac, walked — the God who has been my shepherd all my life, to this very day, the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm…” (Gen 48:15-16)
What about you? What has God done for you? Don’t wait until your life is in its last days to recognize how good it is to be a child of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Barry
I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied…To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Phil. 4:18 & 20

God’s Plan of Grace
DAY 15
10-4-09
GENESIS 43-44-45
Good Morning!
I am stunned by the drama of this episode. Is Joseph toying with his brothers? Why is he doing this? Why doesn’t he just reveal who he is from the start? With everything that Joseph has been through, it is clear to him that God is in control. He knows it. But his brothers do not realize it yet. But one thing is apparently clear to Judah, “God is punishing us for our sins.” (44:16)
All the food in the world can’t change hard hearts. Joseph’s brothers are a part of God’s plan too; and they have not been through what Joseph has. The fear they are experiencing has caused them to confess their sins. However, there is one thing left to experience that will bring the family close together; and reunite all of them - they need to experience grace.
Joseph’s words to his guilty brothers offer the same thing that Joseph was given for his sins – grace. "I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. But don't be upset, and don't be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.” (45:4-6)
We are a part of the plan, too. We are the beneficiaries of this plan. God’s plan is to bring us back together with him by his wonderful grace. Our sins separated us. His grace through our faith in Jesus brought us back together.
This family still has a long way to go. At least they will go through the next struggles together.

Blessings from Wells and Prison Cells
DAY 13
10-2-09
GENESIS 37-38-39
Good Morning!
I’m not in the mood to address Judah, Tamar, and especially Onan. I think I will limit my comments to Joseph…and why not? At this point Judah is not the point man in God’s plan – Joseph is. God’s principle family and their continual sin-drama leads to one of the most soul searching episodes I’ve read so far.
Jacob loves Joseph more than he does his other sons. Joseph is cocky. But he is blessed by God with dreams that are not understood fully. His jealous brother’s desire to do him in, but Reuben and Judah do half of the right thing and save his life.
By God’s providence, Joseph begins a faith journey that rivals, if not eclipses Abraham’s. Joseph had to hold on to his faith from the bottom of a well; as a captive in a caravan; as slave in an Egyptian house; and in an Egyptian prison. In all this trial and grief, God blessed everything that Joseph touched. What does that tell us?
This had to work on Joseph’s head, his heart, and his faith. Questions of “why?” surely came up. Although the text doesn’t say it, human nature and weak flesh cause us to wonder why bad things happen to us. Yet, God’s blessings speak to Joseph from the well and the cell.
People of faith will struggle. God will bless us through it all. We can’t escape from God’s blessings…but we can let circumstances cloud our view of them. Thank God for his blessings. Even the blessings of struggling with faith in hard circumstances.
Barry
I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. (Phil 1:18-19)

Not So Sweet Revnege
DAY 12
10-1-09
GENESIS 34-35-36
Good Morning!
What a horrible thing to endure as a woman and then as a family. Dinah’s rape was more than a “defilement” it was an assault against innocent women in a land and time where women could not protect themselves.
The man in me totally understands the anger and the rage of her brothers – especially her blood-brothers. I guess the lesson I learn here is found in Jacob’s response in Gen 34:30, Afterward Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have ruined me! You've made me stink among all the people of this land—among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few that they will join forces and crush us. I will be ruined, and my entire household will be wiped out!"
Jacob was scared. His sons overreacted. Shechem was guilty and it’s my opinion that justice against him was appropriate. However, the death of every male and the plunder of all their property showed the mindset of people of their day. Their actions were not justice, they were vengeance. Vengeance is not justice.
Now, this is another example of God’s patience as he develops a people who will one day shun this kind of sin. God said in Deuteronomy 32:35 “It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them." Notice God said he is the one who repays and in the right time - his own time.
Anyway, God saves them all. Shechem was going to deal treacherously with them anyway. God worked through this ugly event. God will take even our worst responses and most sinful days and help us get through them if we stay with him. They have a lot to learn and a long way to go until the nation is ready to hear “love your enemies.”
Let God be the judge, jury, and executioner.
