DAY 212
4-30-10
ISAIAH 58-63
Good Morning!
So much of our faith is centered on church activities designed to glorify God and encourage the church that we can very easily neglect matters that are just as weighty and necessary. What is your contribution to the needs of others? Yes, I know you pay taxes. I know you give to the church; and by these gifts of love people are helped. But are you willing give your time, money, and self to help others? This is what God wants to see in his repentant and faithful children.
I’ve outlined for your benefit, Isaiah 58:6-9…
God says, “This is the kind of fasting I want:
• Free those who are wrongly imprisoned.
• Lighten the burden of those who work for you.
• Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.
• Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless.
• Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the Lord will answer. 'Yes, I am here,' he will quickly reply.”
Jesus (who is God in the flesh); and his disciples continued this demand for a compassionate people.
Matt 15:32 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
Eph 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need .
James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
James 2:14-17 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
1 John 3:17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
What does God want to see in us? All the wonderful worship and activities we love and our give time to; and to give compassionate help from our own hands.

The Good News of the Suffering Servant
DAY 211
4-29-10
ISAIAH 52-57
Good Morning!
The point of this prophetic writing is to help Israel come to their senses and repent. God wants them to wake up and see that he has a plan to redeem them – to buy them back. God calls this “good news.” Notice from chapter 52…
1 Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again. 2 Shake off your dust; rise up, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion.
3 "You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed."
7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation.
13 See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. 14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness — 15 so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.
The Holy Sprit of God is using Isaiah to bring the good news of salvation for Israel and the whole world through Jesus Christ. We are not redeemed by money; but by the priceless life and death of the servant of God – the Messiah – Jesus.
There is one more line that is so important for us. "He poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors; for he bore the sin of many." (Isa 53:12)
Israel’s only hope; and the hope of the entire world; is the Holy One of God. The Servant of God and Messiah – Jesus Christ – suffered and died to set all of us free from sin.

Using Our Past Sins and Failures for a Better Future
DAY 210
4-28-10
ISAIAH 47-51
Good Morning!
If only I would have listened to my parents more. If only I would have known what the Bible said. If only I would have kept my mouth shut and ears open. If only I would have prayed first and reacted last. If only.
Regrets are tough to deal with. Yet, memory of our failures can be helpful if we use them to grow and change. God is reminding Israel that if they had not directed their own steps and ignored his commands, everything would be different. Everything would be better for everyone. Is God trying to make them feel guilty? No! He is stating a fact that if they had stayed with him they would not be in the situation they find themselves in. This will help their future if they do not repeat the sins and mistakes of the past.
“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me.” (Isa 48:17-19)
We would do so much better if we decided that God does indeed teach us what is best. Since this is true we must pay attention to God. If we do this, God will bless us and our children.

What Have Your Idols Done for You?
DAY 209
4-27-10
ISAIAH 43-46
Good Morning!
God argues with Israel. He challenges them to tell the truth about him. Sinful Israel knows the truth about God, but they are so sinful they do not want to admit the truth. Why? Because then they would have to change.
God says to them, “I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed — I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” (Isa 43:11-13)
Notice that God says, “You are my witnesses.” Israel knows. They know the truth about God and yet follow the pagan, false, idols of the nations around them. God has been and is their savior. Yet, they prefer the false gods of the world.
The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals; he shapes an idol with hammers, he forges it with the might of his arm…fashions a god and worships it; he makes an idol and bows down to it. (Isa 44:12 & 15)
This scenario has played out everyday before and since the day Isaiah wrote these words. We make our own gods. We fashion our “golden calves.” They look like money, jobs, traditions, self, our heroes, fun, and religion. Just as the false gods did nothing for Israel – except to take them away from God – our false gods will do the same.
Yet, God is so good, awesome, and gracious!
“I have made you, you are my servant; O Israel, I will not forget you. I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Sing for joy, O heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, O earth beneath. (Isa 44:21-23)
Praise God that he loves us, and still stays with us. Thank him for his patience with us as we strive to throw away our idols and follow him only.

What the Lord has Done for Me
DAY 203
4-21-10
ISAIAH 10-14
Good Morning!
God will not abide the sin and dishonesty of his own people. He will judge them; and punish them; and will forgive them; save them; and bring them “home.” God will not leave the pagan nations unpunished, either. By his justice, they will be judged and destroyed for their sins and oppression of God’s people. The same One will do all of this- the Holy One.
Isaiah 11:1-5 “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him — the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord — and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.”
God’s savior for all mankind is Jesus Christ. God’s justice will be through Jesus Christ, as well. Through Jesus Christ, God will make all things right, and perfect, and beautiful. Therefore, I will not fear or worry about the terrible things I see every day. God will take care of everything for us through Jesus. This is why we should praise God every day!

"Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you." (Isaiah 12:4-6)

God's Sign to Sinful Man - Immanuel
DAY 202
4-20-10
ISAIAH 5-9
Good Morning!
At the beginning of the WR reading challenge I promised to not preach or write sermons; I said I would only give my personal comments. However, in today’s reading, it begs for an outline. I can’t help myself!
1. God describes those who reject him – Proud, Worldly, and Dishonest.
Isa 5:21-23 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent.
2. God warns that we should never follow the ways of the sinful.
Isa 8:11 The Lord spoke to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people.
3. Good News! God has a plan to save us from our sins and weakness…Jesus Christ.
Isa 7:14-15 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
4. In Christ, God helps us find our way to back him.
Isa 9:2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
Reading Isaiah helps me understand how far a person of God can actually go from him. It also shows me just how much God wants us back; and how much he has done to save us from sin and save us from ourselves. God is so good to us.
Only Immanuel – God with us – will save us from our sins!

How God Feels About Our Sin
DAY 201
4-19-10
ISAIAH 1-4
Good Morning!
Isaiah the prophet paints a picture of Israel that shows how God feels when his children rebel against him. As I read this morning, I tried to keep out of my mind the impersonal view of looking at a rebellious nation; and tried to look the people and me.
These prophecies – or messages from God – will not have a personal effect on you unless you make the messages personal. So, when reading the prophets, honestly look at yourself and your life in Christ. We are not above rebellion! In fact, one definition of sin is rebellion. If we honestly look at our lives, God’s grace, mercy, and encouragement will help you and I be the children of God that he knows we can be.
Isa 1:2 "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.”
Isa 1:11 “The multitude of your sacrifices — what are they to me?” says the Lord.
Isa 1:15 “Even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.”
Isa 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
God wants to help us when we are in rebellion. We must approach him honestly and humbly. He doesn’t want to hear hypocritical prayers like nothing is wrong. But one thing is for sure – he loves us no matter what.
Why is our sin so hurtful to God? HE LOVES US!

Avoiding Extremes
DAY 198
4-16-10
ECCLESIASTES 5-8
Good Morning!
The extremes of life and faith can be harmful to people. In life, extremes in wealth or pleasure can be as harmful as the extremes of poverty and self-abasement. In faith, the extremes of trying to be perfect in everything can be as harmful as not caring about it all. Extremes are harmful.
As Solomon looks back on his life and the lessons he learned, he realized he lived an extreme life. What did he learn?
"In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: a righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness. Do not be over-righteous, neither be over-wise — why destroy yourself? Do not be over-wicked, and do not be a fool — why die before your time? It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes." (Eccl 7:15-18)
Now, even in this we must avoid extreme views. Can we love too much? Know too much? Be blessed by God too much? Of course not. However, it is better to be people of humble moderation that trust God; rely on him fully; and allow God to guide our lives as he sees fit.
I like “Prayer of Agur” in Proverbs 30:7-9. "Two things I ask of you, O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the Lord?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”
As Christians, ours is a simple life of worship, discipleship, service, and godly living. Paul summed up this kind of life up very well when he wrote, “Live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

What if You Won the Lottery?
DAY 197
4-15-10
ECCLESIASTES 1-4
Good Morning!
I am always amazed when I read about lottery winners who end up broke, unhappy, and worse off than when they were “regular” people. Or, when I see famous Hollywood celebrities, who have everything that fame and riches can bring, and yet are miserable. I am amazed, but not surprised.
This is what happened to Solomon. He was given God’s wisdom; David’s throne; the world’s wealth; and the people’s fawning admiration. Yet, he was miserable. He was bored. He was frustrated. So he set off on a journey to find the meaning of life and happiness. Ecclesiastes is the written account of the lessons that the greatest man in the world learned about God, self, life, and what is most important.
Solomon recounted his journey of discovery and what he tried to make himself happy:
Eccl 1:3 What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?
Eccl 1:13 I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom.
Eccl 2:1 I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.
Eccl 2:4 I undertook great projects.
What did he discover?
Eccl 2:23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest.
Eccl 3:19 Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: as one dies, so dies the other.
What were his conclusions?
Eccl 1:2 Everything is meaningless.
In the rest of Ecclesiastes, he’ll go into detail about his journey. At this point remember one thing – A LIFE THAT IS NOT FOCUSED ON GOD IS TOTALLY MEANINGLESS.

What Are You Working For?
DAY 196
4-14-10
PROVERBS 27-31
Good Morning!
It is amazing how a person can live their life pursuing things that do not matter. The old saying of “work to live; do not live to work” is so true. If a person of God falls into the trap of working to “be somebody” or to have more and more might achieve that goal, but in reality what do they end up with? Is a broken home; a messed up marriage; disappointed kids; and no spiritual life worth whatever worldly pursuits can offer?
Solomon said, “Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse.” (Prov. 28:6) Solomon would know! He spent a good portion of his life pursuing riches and other decaying, unimportant things; and in the end he said it was worthless.
One of the worst things we can do is let the pursuit of wealth and position take us away from God and family. Solomon said, “Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home.” (Prov. 27:8) Jesus of course said it best, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” (Matt. 6:33)
The lesson for today is simple. Live your life to pursue God. Don’t let the pursuit of temporary worldly things take you away from God, the church, your spouse, your family, or your home. In the end you will not find true satisfaction any where else.

Are You a Promise Keeper?
DAY 195
4-13-10
PROVERBS 20-26
Good Morning!
There is wisdom in thinking before you make a promise. When we make a promise and only later think it through, we are setting ourselves and others up for disappointments and problems.
Prov. 20:25 It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows.
Failure to keep a promise is a trap of Satan. From broken promises come disappointed kids; heartache; divorce; broken friendships; bad reputations; and needs that go unfulfilled. Obviously, the answer is to not make promises too quickly; to pray first; and to have the godly character and integrity to be a promise keeper.
Let Jesus’ words ring your ears – “Let your 'Yes ' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” (Matt. 5:37)

You Can’t Fool God
DAY 195
4-11-10
PROVERBS 16-19
Good Morning!
God knows what’s going on. He knows what’s in my heart; in my head; and in my life. God also knows why I do what I do. In some ways, that is inconvenient and even embarrassing. However, knowing that God knows actually can help me have a clean heart; a clean mind; and a clean life.
Solomon writes, “All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.” (Prov.16:2)
This proverb has two lessons:
1. We try to fool ourselves into thinking that our sins are not really that bad. We make excuses. We ignore the truth.
2. We can’t fool God. He knows the truth. God does not judge by the outward appearances; he judges motives and the heart and their corresponding actions.
When Solomon’s father David sinned, he knew that only God could help him. He knew the source of his sin was his heart and motives. He wrote in Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God.” Only God can give us a pure heart; but only we can produce pure motives. How do we learn to have pure, godly motives?
“Acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.” (1 Chron. 28:9)
“Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Tim. 2:22)
It is good that God knows us so well.

One Nation Under God
DAY 194
4-10-10
PROVERBS 12-15
Good Morning!
In 1787, the United States struggled to unite the colonies into a new nation governed by a constitution. The battles of the revolution were only the beginning. The battle to build a nation and government under God had to be fought.
During the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin said…
“In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor.... And have we now forgotten this powerful friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: ‘that God governs in the affairs of men.’ And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, sir, in the sacred writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little, partial, local interests; our projects will be confounded; and we ourselves shall be a reproach and a byword down to future ages.”
Our Founding Fathers were inspired and blessed by the Heavenly Father. They knew that the way for the new nation to be blessed was to base its founding principles on godly principles. If God builds the nation, it will stand. But if the nation abandons those principles, it will fall. If only modern leaders could be as wise as Benjamin Franklin was!
In our reading today, we are blessed to be reminded of what Solomon wrote in Proverbs 14:34… “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”
Dear Heavenly Father …Forgive our nation. Give us courage to come back to you. Bless us again.

Receiving Our Due
DAY 193
4-9-10
PROVERBS 8-11
Good Morning!
The last words of today’s reading are very important to keep in mind. There are always consequences for our actions and words. The way we live and talk affect us and those around us. Only a fool thinks that they can sin or offend with impunity. The scientific axiom is true: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Solomon’s words therefore are true! “If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!” (Prov. 11:31) Paul said it another way in Gal. 6:7-9, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Be careful about what you say and do. Its better receive God’s blessing than his wrath. We will receive one or the other.

“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” (Heb. 10:36)

Another Reason to be a Daily Bible Reader
DAY 192
4-8-10
PROVERBS 4-7
Good Morning!
As I wrote yesterday, reading God’s word has four over all purposes: Devotion; Encouragement; Information; and Wisdom. We should not neglect the pursuit of God’s wisdom. Why? When we read the Bible, depending on what is going on in our lives, we read for a purpose. For instance, if I am feeling down, encouraging biblical words are what I need, like, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). If I am sinful, I recall, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). God’s wisdom is there to help me in any and every situation.
When the wisdom of God is taken into our hearts and applied to our lives, it will make our hearts and lives better! We will be blessed. We will be strong. We will be secure in life no matter what happens.
How do we respond to the wisdom of God? How do we apply God’s wise principles? Proverbs 4:20-27 gives us the way.
• Pay attention.
• Listen closely.
• Do not let them out of your sight.
• Keep them within your heart.
• Guard your heart.
• Put away perversity from your mouth.
• Keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
• Let your eyes look straight ahead.
• Take only ways that are firm.
• Do not swerve to the right or the left.
• Keep your foot from evil.
And if we put God’s wisdom into practice, it will give “life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.” (4:22)
That gives a whole new reason to be a daily Bible reader!

God’s Wisdom for His People
DAY 191
4-7-10
PROVERBS 1-3
Good Morning!
Reading God’s word has four over all purposes: Devotion; Encouragement; Information; and Wisdom. Reading helps us to praise God; receive blessings for our life; and knowledge of God and his salvation. Depending on who we are; our personality; and personal circumstances; we will emphasize any one of them.
I wonder if reading to learn and gain God’s wisdom receives less attention? Solomon wrote and collected wise sayings to help himself; his children; and Israel to make wise decisions; focus on a godly life; be safe from sin; and to receive the blessings of God.
In Proverbs 1:2-7, we are told that from God we attain knowledge; wisdom; understanding; guidance; and insight; to live a disciplined and prudent life. It will help us do what is right and just and fair. But most of all, God’s wisdom will help us fear the Lord. Ultimately, that is the most important thing.
Read Proverbs carefully. They are general truths of Godly, inspired wisdom. They will help each of us live the life we want to live.

God Trains His Warriors for Battle
DAY 189
4-6-10
PSALMS 144-150
Good Morning!
Our readings today are more Psalms of praise. Have you noticed that the Psalms have two main themes? Praise and Victory-Vindication. Sounds like most of them are written by King Warrior!
Right off, the first verse in Psalm 144 strikes me. “Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” How exactly does God train David to fight? Is fighting a spiritual gift? I guess you could say that it’s a gift that’s necessary for leaders. On the other hand, a warriors heart – the spirit of one who fights and struggles for God, for the saints, and for the lost is a spiritual matter.
David knew that God was the one who protected him and gave him the strength to win the battles he faced. God also gives us a spirit of strength and bravery to fight life’s battles – just like he did for David. The battle belongs to the Lord; and he gives the victory. He vindicates the lives of those who fight in his name.
Ephesians 6:10-11 Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
We have every skill we need to fight the devil and win souls for Christ.

My Favorite Psalm
DAY 189
4-5-10
PSALMS 139-143
Good Morning!
Psalm 139 is my favorite Psalm. On so many levels, this classic song sings to me. I use it for funerals because it sends a message that God is always watching, loving, and helping those in distress. God is concerned for us.
But the most important message for me is that I don’t have to worry about my life for two very comforting reasons:
139:16 All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
139:18 When I awake, I am still with you.
God determines how long I will live. That doesn’t mean I throw caution to the wind and live a reckless life; but it does mean I don’t have to worry like people of the world.
I also live in comfort knowing that no matter what happens to me – whether I live a long time or not; whether I live in health or not; and no matter if I die today – when I wake, my first experience will be seeing the Lord.
This is why I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.

As you are serving, don’t forget to worship
DAY 188
4-4-10
PSALMS 132-138
Good Morning!
It happens to me all the time – I lose sight of God in my ministry. Sound strange? Well, it’s not, considering that in our daily pursuits and activities we can do good, positive, and godly things; and forget the reason why we do them. These activities still praise God. They still help people. However, we must never forget that we serve the living God. Our ministry activities are supposed to bring us closer to God.
Psalm 134 Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who minister by night in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord. May the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.
My uncle, who was a worship leader for years, once asked me the question, “What is the most important thing for a song leader to remember as he leads? I thought of tempo, pitch, song selection, and smiling. He shook his head and said, “Don’t forget to worship God yourself.”
For all God servants who serve him every day, don’t forget to lift up your hands and worship him.

Where’s the Rejoicing?
DAY 187
4-3-10
PSALMS 120-131
Good Morning!
Sometimes I get discouraged at the glum attitudes and sour faces I see in worship. I wonder where the joy of worship is for these Christians. To keep from being down about it, I look for the many joyful faces in the assembly. They are such an encouragement to me.
My friends, I know we can’t always be excited in worship. Difficulties in our life can make our worship a hiding place from the struggles of the world. That is a great blessing. However, I pray that we can more often repeat David’s words in Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." This is the heart of a person who is glad to worship God.
Ours is a life of worship. Give God what he deserves. God understands when our hearts are sore; and when we are down. So, worship God anyway. Let the Psalms encourage you to "put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption." (Psalm 130:7)

Respect for the Word of God
DAY 186
4-2-10
PSALMS 119
Good Morning!
Psalm 119:160 All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.
One of the saddest tendencies all believers have is the way we pick and choose what we believe and what we emphasize in God’s word. We argue for what we like; we argue against someone else’s favorite passages. Very strange.
David is clear – all of God’s words are true. Old Testament and New; the law and the gospel; God’s word is timeless. Respect for the sanctity of the Bible is getting less and less. Perhaps it would be a good idea to return to the biblical principle of not adding to; and not taking away from God’s word. It’s not just a good idea; it’s a command of God!
Deut 4:1-2 Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.
Rev 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
It’s not as easy as it sounds. We must be good students. However, God will bless the attitude of humbly accepting the word of God in our lives. (James 1:21)

Like Father, Like Son
DAY 185
4-1-10
PSALMS 108-118
Good Morning!
In Deuteronomy 6:7, God tells Israel to “Impress them [God’s Laws] on your children.” Parents were to teach and impress the words of God so that their children would be blessed.
Even though David struggled as a father, he obviously taught Solomon the word of God. It is very interesting that Psalm 111:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” In Proverbs 9:10, the very same thought from Psalm 111 is used. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
We don’t know if David was the author of Psalm 111, but the compilation of Israel’s songs by David and others was definitely on the heart of Solomon when he was given the responsibility of being king. Solomon’s wisdom was given directly by God, but he started out with the wisdom that came from his Godly father, David.
Fathers, teach your children the word of God. They won’t forget it.
